Re-Registration

Our core responsibility to the public is to ensure all nurses are fully qualified and competent before they ultimately gain Board approval, and use the title Registered Nurse (RN).

In order for your application for re-registration to be assessed, a completed application form together with the payment of fees must be received by the Nurses Board of Victoria. Once these have been received, all applicants for re-registration as a nurse in Victoria must fulfill the requirements of the Board’s current policies for a completed application.

Lapse in practice information for nurses applying for re-registration

Before submitting an application, please take the time to familiarise yourself with the Board’s changes to recency of practice criteria to ensure you are eligible to apply.

If you have previously been registered in Victoria and are planning on returning to nursing, please note;

Persons who have not practiced:

a) between 5 and up to 15 years are required to successfully complete a Board approved re-entry program or an accredited return to practice program prior to registration being granted.

b) for more than 15 years will not be eligible for registration/re-registration with the Board. Applicants are advised to contact a University or TAFE to seek recognition of prior learning based on their previous nursing studies.
