Overseas Nurse Initial Registration Requirements
Each overseas applicant must satisfy the Board that they:
- have obtained a qualification that is substantially equivalent or is based on similar competencies to an accredited course that leads to registration in Victoria;
- are competent in speaking or communicating in English for the purposes of practising as a registered nurse;
- are in good standing with the nursing regulatory authority in the country of last practice;
- are fit and competent to practise as a registered nurse; and
- have provided evidence of identity and have paid the prescribed fee.
To apply for registration the applicant must:
- complete the prescribed application form and pay the prescribed fee; and
- provide satisfactory documentary evidence (as described in the application form) which supports the application and fulfills the requirements of s. 6 or s. 7 Health Professions Registration Act 2005; and
- provide any further information or documentation in respect of the application the Board may reasonably require.
The Board may also require applicants to fulfill the following requirements prior to granting registration:
- undertake an English Language Skills Test approved by the Board; and/or
- successfully complete a Board accredited competency program for overseas qualified nurses.
The qualifications and requirements for registration in Victoria are prescribed by the Health Professions Registration Act 2005.
