Nurse Practitioner Categories and Formularies

Nurse practitioners are endorsed in at least one of the following categories. The categories have been developed in accordance with Section 20 (1) of the Health Professions Registration Act 2005 and are published in the table below in accordance with Section 20(4) this Act.

Each category has a list of schedule 2, 3, 4 and 8 poisons (‘drug formulary’) that a nurse practitioner endorsed in that category is qualified to obtain and to have in his or her possession and to use, sell or supply subject to the Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances Act 1981 (“the Act”) . Each drug formulary has been approved by the Minister of Health pursuant to section 14A(1) of the Act. The categories are a skill-based set of categories that recognises the common practices across different practice areas and common prescribing needs.

The Board is in the process of developing some of the formularies for the categories listed. These will be published as they are approved.
