New Graduates

“Australia’s most respected and trusted professionals” (Roy Morgan Research, April 2007)

Nursing offers opportunities to work within a variety of settings across the health sector both in Australia and internationally. With the potential for significant career advances, nurses are always in demand.

To prepare nurses for their ultimate objective of providing the highest standards of care for the public, the profession is regulated and all graduates must be registered. Only then can they call themselves registered nurses, and practise as such.

Divisions of Nursing Practice
There are different divisions of nursing practice, each with its own criteria.

Division 1: You must complete a three year Bachelor of Nursing degree at an accredited institution. On completion you may be eligible for registration with the Nurses Board of Victoria. There is also an opportunity to undertake a three year Bachelor of Midwifery degree if this is your area of interest.

For more information on the Bachelor of Nursing, please visit our Education section.

Division 2: You must complete a one year Certificate IV in Nursing course at a Board approved Registered Training Organisation. This course may be undertaken either full / part time or by traineeship mode. On completion you may be eligible for registration with the Nurses Board of Victoria.

Becoming Registered

Nursing is a profession involving close working with, and care, of the public.

Things you need to consider:
Your Health: You must have the physical and mental wellbeing to carry out the duties and uphold the responsibilities of a registered nurse. If there are concerns in this area, the Board may require you to be assessed by a health professional it will appoint.

Your Character: You may be required to show you are trustworthy and a police check may be requested. If you have been disqualified from practising in any other profession or occupation, or had disciplinary action taken against you, then you may not be eligible for registration by the Board.
