Endorsement Applications - Midwifery

This section is for applicants who are applying for registration or are currently registered in division 1 who may be eligible for endorsement in midwifery. Prior to submitting the form please read carefully the Checklist of Requirements and Information Sheet included in the application form.

Following the introduction of the Health Professions Registration Act 2005 midwives in Victoria may be registered to practice in one of the following ways:

  • Midwives who have successfully completed an accredited Bachelor of Midwifery qualification may be registered either in general category with restriction to practice midwifery or in specific category;
  • If the accredited three year undergraduate Bachelor of Midwifery course (direct entry midwifery) was successfully completed prior to July 1 2007 the midwife is currently registered in division 1 in the GENERAL category with restriction to practice only in midwifery;
  • Direct entry midwives who have registered with the Board after the July 1 2007 introduction of the Health Professions Registration Act 2005 (HPRA) are registered in division 1 in the SPECIFIC category on the basis of the direct entry midwifery qualification. General division 1 registrants who have completed an accredited postgraduate midwifery qualification or hospital based midwifery course (no longer available), previously recognised as an additional qualification on the register are now recognized as an endorsement in midwifery on the register;
  • Double degrees which lead to registration as a division 1 nurse and endorsement as a midwife are offered by some universities.

Registered nurses and midwives in Victoria are accountable for their practice and for ensuring that activities in provision of health services are within their scope of practice as defined by the nurse’s / midwife’s educational preparation and clinical experience.
