Our core responsibility to the public is to ensure all nurses are fully qualified and competent before they ultimately gain Board approval, and use the title Registered Nurse (RN).

How do you know if a nurse is registered?


Nurses renew their registration each year and must carry their renewal of registration certificate as evidence to employers and the public that they are registered as a nurse.

Under the Health Professions Registration Act 2005, Nurses registered in Victoria are required to renew their registration prior to 31 December each year.

What are the English language requirements for registration with the Board?

The Board is aware that there is potential for confusion regarding the English language competency test result required for initial entry to the register of nurses in Victoria.

The information below is intended to clarify these requirements for potential or current applicants for nurse registration in Victoria.

The Register


At present, nurses are registered in five divisions, however divisions 3, 4 and 5 are closed to new registrants.
  • Division 1 (includes graduates from accredited university courses as well as midwives, maternal and child health and psychiatric nurses and nurse practitioners by endorsement)
  • Division 2 (includes graduates from accredited courses in the VET sector)
  • Division 3 (closed division - psychiatric nurses)
  • Division 4 (closed division - mental retardation nurses)
  • Division 5 (closed division - mothercraft nurses)

Please be advised that the renewal period for 2008 has ended. If you have not renewed your registration and you wish to practise as a registered nurse in 2008, you will be required to apply for re-registration.
