Approved programs leading to registration and endorsement
Division 1
The undergraduate nursing course accredited by the Nurses Board of Victoria is the Bachelor of Nursing. Successful completion of an accredited Bachelor of Nursing course leads to registration in division 1 of the register.
The Nurses Board of Victoria accredits each course and approves the university campus to conduct the accredited course.
The below document includes a list of courses approved under the Nurses Act 1993 which also lead to registration in division 1 of the register under the Health Professions Registrations Act 2005.

Division 1 - Recognition of Additional Qualification
Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing
In addition to courses leading to registration and protection of title under Section 118 of the Health Professions Registration Act 2005 the Nurses Board of Victoria also has discretionary powers to approve other courses that provide qualifications in addition to those required for registration. Successful completion of an accredited psychiatric/mental health nursing course leads to recognition of the qualification on the register.
There are two methods of obtaining recognition of a psychiatric/mental health nursing qualification in Victoria, these are: the Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Mental Health double degree; and the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Mental Health.
The below document includes a list of courses approved under the Nurses Act 1993 which also lead to registration in division 1 of the register and/or recognition of an additional qualification in psychiatric/mental health nursing under the Health Professions Registrations Act 2005.

Maternal and Child Health Nursing
Successful completion of an accredited postgraduate maternal and child health nursing course leads to recognition of the qualification on the register.
The below document includes a list of courses approved under the Nurses Act 1993 which also lead to recognition of an additional qualification in maternal and child health nursing under the Health Professions Registrations Act 2005.
Accredited Courses Leading to Recognition of Qualification in Maternal and Child Health Nursing
Division 1 - Midwifery Endorsement
The Nurses Board of Victoria has responsibility under Section 118 of the Health Professions Registration Act 2005 to approve courses which lead to endorsement of registration - midwife.
There are three methods of obtaining a midwifery qualification in Victoria, these are: the direct entry Bachelor of Midwifery; the Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery double degree; and the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery.
Graduates of the direct entry Bachelor of Midwifery are registered as division 1 nurses in the category of 'Specific' registration.
Graduates of the double degree 'Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery are registered as division 1 nurses in the 'General' category with an endorsement - midwife.
Graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma of Midwifery course who are already registered as division 1 nurses in the 'General' category will have their registration endorsed - midwife.

Accredited Courses Leading to Registration in Division 1 and/or Recognition of Qualification in Midwifery
Nurse Practitioner
The Nurses Board of Victoria has responsibility under Section 118 of the Health Professions Registration Act 2005 to endorse the registration for the protected title of nurse practitioner.
A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse educated and authorised to function autonomously and collaboratively in an advanced and extended clinical role. (ANMC National Competency Standards for the Nurse Practitioner).
The below document includes a list of courses approved under the Nurses Act 1993 which also lead to endorsement of nurse practitioner under the Health Professions Registration Act 2005.
Accredited Courses Which May Lead to Endorsement on Division 1 of the Register as a Nurse Practitioner
Division 2
Successful completion of the Certificate IV in Nursing course delivered by an approved education provider leads to registration as an endorsed division 2 registered nurse. The course can be delivered either via a full time / part time mode or as a traineeship. Registered Training Organisations must be approved by the Board to deliver the approved course in each mode of delivery for each campus. Following completion of the course students must apply to the Nurses Board of Victoria for registration.
Education providers approved to deliver the Certificate IV in Nursing
Division 2 for Bachelor of Nursing Students
Bachelor of Nursing students are able to continue to apply for registration in division 2 of the register under section 5(1)(ab) of the Health Professions Registration Act 2005. This allows undergraduates who have successfully completed Year 2 of their degree to work as a registered nurse division 2 in health related areas while continuing their studies.

It is the university's responsibility to ensure these requirements are met.
Division 2 Endorsement: From 1 July 2008
The Nurses Board of Victoria has responsibility under Section 22 (1)(2) of the Health Professions Registration Act 2005 to endorse the registration of nurses to administer medication. Following successful completion of approved units by an approved education provider a division 2 registered nurse can apply to the Nurses Board of Victoria for endorsement on the Register.
PLEASE NOTE: Accreditation for 21506VIC Course in Medication Administration for Division 2 Registered Nurses in Victoria Version 2 ceases on 30 June 2008. The Nurses Board of Victoria has approved until 2013 the following units from the HLT43407 Certificate IV in Nursing to replace the Course.
These following units are to commence from 1 July 2008:
• HLTAP501A Analyse health information;
• HLTEN507A Administer and monitor medications in the work environment.
These routes are the current approved routes - Enteral, Topical, Subcutaneous, and Intramuscular.

Pre-Registration and Initial Registration Courses for Overseas Qualified Nurses
Overseas qualified nurses seeking registration in Victoria may be required by the Board to successfully complete an initital registration course. The Board assesses each overseas qualified nurse on an individual basis and determines the necessary English language testing and initial registration course requirements.
